ESA contributes to consultation on work-life balance

The European Sunday Alliance contributed to the European Commission consultation on work-life balance. Members of ESA handed over the consultation to Mr Baudouin Baudru, cabinet of Commissioner Ms Marianne Thyssen.

Conference in the Polish Parliament on protection of Sunday as a public good

On 8 March a conference "Changes in the Polish trade" was organised and held in the Polish parliament building in Warsaw. The organisers were the National Section of Commerce Sector Workers of "Solidarity" Trade Union in cooperation with the parliamentary team for the Promotion of Entrepreneurship and employers' organisations from the commerce industry.

 

The conference was devoted to two topics: the legal protection of Sunday as a public good and a draft law on trade in the perspective of equality of opportunity in the industry.

French trade union demands the protection of work-free Sunday

Fédération des Employés et Cadres - Force Ouvrière, Section fédérale du commerce, a French trade union for the retail sector, has issued a press release demanding the protection of a work-free Sunday.

European Day for a Work Free Sunday

Today, 3 March - the European Day for a Work Free Sunday - the European Sunday Alliance reminds everyone of the right to a work free Sunday. Our colleagues at the Austrian Sunday Alliance highlight in a statement that the work free Sunday is time not dedicated to a specific purpose, especially not an economic one. The common day of rest is a symbol the richness of a society, the prosperity of free time.

 

Together with our members and supporters, the European Sunday Alliance is campaigning for the work free Sunday and decent working hours in Europe toward the EU institutions. We keep going on!

The protection of the work free Sunday is a protection of liberty

Time-conference takes place in Berlin

On Wednesday, 17 February, the German Sunday Alliance hold its 6th so-called Time-conference in Berlin. The conference highlighted the right of a work-free Sunday for employees of call centres. The former president of the Federal Constitutional Court, Prof. Dr Hans-Jürgen Papier, explained that the protection of the work free Sunday is a protection of liberty.

Time-conference to take place in Berlin

On Wednesday, 17 February 2016, the German National Sunday Alliance will hold its 6th national “Time-conference” in Berlin. It is an invitation for presentation and exchange of best practices in advocating for a work-free Sunday. The conference will also provide opportunity for discussion with politicians from the German Bundestag about the state of play of the work-free Sunday in Germany.

UNITED KINGDOM: House of Commons stops plans for more shopping hours

The British House of Commons stopped the governmental plans for even more shopping hours on Sundays in England an Wales. This might partially be due to the work of “Keep Sunday Special”, the British supporter of the European Alliance.

AUSTRIA: Austrian Constitutional Court confirms shop opening hours

14 June 2012

In its judgement (G 66/11-8) of 14 June 2012 the Austrian Constitutional Court confirmed that the prohibition on shop opening on Sundays and bank holidays is consistent with the Austrian constitution. The overall objectives of shop closing or opening hours are: the protection of the interests of consumers, the aims of the competition regime and the socio-political function. All of these objectives would be in the public interest, says the Court.
